Sèvres cup and saucer with a tortoiseshell ground, a wreath and a beige drapery motif, 1802

Cup height 7.9 cm, saucer ø 13.8 cm

Marked in red Sevres X for Year 10 of the Republic, or September 1801 to September 1802

This shape of cup is not otherwise known.

The decoration matches the service described as “fond écaille arabesque” which was delivered to the British Foreign Secretary Lord Liverpool on 1 December 1802, but it does not include cups and saucers. (See Napoleon I et Sèvres, p. 249, no. 25).

Much of the Lord Liverpool service is today in the collection of the National Trust at Lyme Park, Cheshire.
