Pair of Sèvres vases with a dark blue ground and two colour gilding, 1775-6

Vase pot-pourri feuilles de myrthe, third size

Height 22 cm

Interlaced Ls, gilder’s mark VC for an unidentified gilder working 1775-6

Dark blue (beau bleu) ground, two-colour gilding of scrolls, wreaths and leaf trails. Gilt-bronze bases, probably early nineteenth century.

The Wallace Collection catalogue lists three versions of this shape, but the present pair are an as yet unrecorded fourth variant.

Two-colour gilding is an uncommon refinement, especially on soft paste. We owned in 2003 a cup and saucer with very similar two-colour gold decoration and the same gilder’s mark.
